Photo of the Week - Mother Great Egret and Chick Share a Moment

The great egret is an icon in the Florida landscape.  So much so, in fact, that it is the state bird of Florida.  Every year, during the breeding season, these magnificent, massive and beautiful birds gather at rookeries across the state to have offspring.  Hungry alligators beneath them provide protection from predators, but also a danger to those birds who fall from the nest.

I took this image at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Rookery, and it shows a mother egret locking bills with the younger chick.  So often, the chicks are being violent and demanding of the mother so it can be fed.  They are unrelenting in demanding food from the mother.  In this case, however,  we have more of a tender moment , where the chick is relaxed and touching bills with the mother.
